Safety | Experiments are fun .. but they are more fun if everyone survives. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Events Calendar | There are many science and engineering events in the Washington, DC area.
In 2014, we had tables at the GLMS-MC mineral show (March 15), NoVa Mini Maker Faire (March 16), Rockville Science Day (April 6), Cabin Fever (April 12), and TARC (May 10).
Eddy currents
| These experiments might convince you that gravity is optional ..
until you understand the physics.
| Copper Tubes, Aluminum Soda Cans, and Aluminum Rings Homopolar motors
| A battery, a magnet, and a piece of wire is all you need to make these motors.
| Cartesian diver
| Some objects float in water, others sink. The Cartesian diver floats until
you make him sink.
| Resonance
| Many objects will make a tone when they are struck.
However, with a little violin rosin, you can make noise just by
sliding your finger over metal objects. Water works best with glass.
Tree limbs work with brass bowls.
| Chain of Beads
| Objects in motion tend to stay in motion .. except you won't expect this
| Rattlebacks
| These devices are solid, with no internal mechanisms. When spun one way,
they will continue until friction removes all the available energy.
However ...
| Magnetic fields
| Several devices that show magnetic fields in 3 dimensions.
| Magnetic repulsion
| Carbon rods and pyrolytic carbon
| Tippy Tops
| These tops obviously defy gravity - they flip upside down as they loose energy
and lift the heavy part off the ground.
| Tumbling Rings
| This is a chain of 30 rings. When the top one is dropped, it appears to fall to the bottom
| Marble Machines
| Lifting the outer shell of these 3 machines makes marbles go in circles
| Reuleaux objects
| Objects don't have to be round (or spherical) to roll.
| Flying Cups
| If you spin objects - like straws and styrofoam cups - you can make them fly
| Heatpipes
| Many metals conduct heat .. but heatpipes do it faster. (Much faster)
| Dragon
| An example of the hollow-face illusion - it appears to move when you move
| Crystal Growing
| Everyone should have a Coal Garden
| Putt Putt Boat
| This miniature steam engine appears to violate all 3 of Newton's laws of motion.
| Magic Fountain
| This fountain, made from 2 plastic bottles and 2 straws, uses air pressure to move water against gravity
| Juggling
| Just a list of a few juggling clubs in the DC area
